What is Needed to Quote Your Circuit Board Assembly

I am often asked, what does SMD need to provide a quotation. I thought it would be helpful to elaborate on what SMD requires at a minimum.

• Bill of Material (BOM) – Ideally in Microsoft Excel format, this document needs to include:
  • Reference designator for each component.
  • Manufacturer of each component.
  • Manufacturer part number for each component.

SMD works with the top electronics distributors to evaluate your component stock amount, pricing, and lead-time should stock not be available.

• PCB Fabrication Data – These are the electronic computer-aided design (CAD) files needed to fabricate the PCB. In addition to the CAD files, additional fabrication details needed are:
  • Material Type – Typically FR-4 but needs to be documented.
  • Material Thickness – Typically 0.062″ but can also be 0.031″ or 0.093″.
  • Finish – Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold (ENIG) is preferred due to several advantages over other surface platings such as Hot Air Solder Leveling (HASL).
  • Copper Weight – Typically is 1 ounce, but can also be 2 ounce.
  • Soldermask Color – Default is green, but other colors are available.
  • Silkscreen Color – Default is white, but other colors are available.

• Quantity or Range of Quantities – SMD is equipped to offer a broad range of quantities from prototype/pre-production builds as small as 1 piece all the way up to production volumes into the thousands of boards per lot.
• Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) – If your assembly needs to meet this directive, please inform SMD so it is included.

SMD also provides Cable and Wiring Harness Assemblies. Customers like the convenience of having SMD supply both their circuit board assembly and cable/wiring harness needs and requirements.

• Bill of Material (BOM) – Ideally in Microsoft Excel format, this document needs to include:
  • Manufacturer of each component including the wire.
  • Manufacturer part number of each component including the wire.
• Assembly Drawing
  • Showing the length as well as a +/- tolerance.
